(Job #514390) Public Affairs/Communications Specialist II, Alumni & Donor Communications Specialist, $3,515 - $6,358 monthly. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Alumni Relations. Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Alumni Relations, the Alumni & Donor Communications Specialist has primary responsibility for coordinating development and implementation of marketing projects for alumni, parents, donors, and other special constituents, and frequently serves as the primary writer and editor for these projects. As a member of the marketing team, the Communications Specialist participates in developing broader, multi-year communications plans, including key messages, tactics and measures. The Communications Specialist serves as a collaborator for the Humboldt magazine and helps to develop a distinctive "voice" for the magazine and other key materials that reflect the character of the university, alumni, and donors. The Communications Specialist writes copy, articles, and stories on a variety of topics for multiple campus print and electronic communications, and develops copy for letters, websites, and other collateral; provides communications support for special campaigns and initiatives. In all communications projects, the Communications Specialist demonstrates respect and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of audiences.

Key Responsibilities: Coordinate development and implementation of marketing projects for alumni, parents, donors and other special constituent groups. Serve as the primary writer and editor, when necessary, for these projects. Work closely with staff in Development, Alumni Relations, and other key areas to ensure communications projects help meet key goals and objectives. Ensure that content is creative and engaging, and that the content takes into account the diverse backgrounds of audiences. Serve as a communications point-of-contact for the Development Office.

Serve as collaborator and primary writer for numerous alumni and parent communications vehicles. These include, but are not limited to, Humboldt magazine, monthly e-newsletters for alumni and parents, the giving website, and the alumni website. Develop a distinctive "voice" for the magazine and other key materials that reflect the character of the university, alumni, and donors. Provide ongoing and timely content, as well as interactive content that is responsive to audience interests and concerns. Develop articles and other content related to alumni and parents for use in other campus publications, websites, and social media.

Write copy, press releases, and articles on a variety of topics, for use in campus marketing and other communications. Assist with editing material written by colleagues and other members of the campus community. Ensure that written material serves to reinforce HSU's brand and key messages. Provide creative insight and analysis to assist with projects ranging from copy writing to multi-year communications. Coordinate special projects as needed and assist with divisional communication needs as they arise.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
  • Strong written communications, research, and interviewing skills.
  • Strong understanding of grammar and Associated Press style.
  • Demonstrated customer focus skills and ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Good organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate closely with a creative team.
  • Working knowledge of basic media relations and marketing principles.
  • Ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences.
  • Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles, and formats. Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.
  • Equivalent to two years directly related professional in media, marketing, or public relations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative, engaging content for marketing and communications purposes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of marketing and media relations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working in alumni relations or other affinity-driven organization.
  • Experience gathering content for multimedia use.
  • Experience using a content management system to post content online.
  • Experience editing a newsletter or other publication.
  • Experience coordinating the work of in-house creative staff as well as contractors and freelancers.
