Position Description:
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities houses UCLA's Sustainable LA Grand Challenge (SLA GC). The SLA GC is a campuswide initiative launched in 2013 by the Chancellor to transition Los Angeles to the most sustainable megacity by 2050. The premise of the SLA GC is to take world-class research from across disciplines and apply it to a hotter and more populous Los Angeles through policy recommendations, technology breakthroughs, and partnerships to demonstrate and implement scalable urban sustainability solutions. The SLA GC is bridging the gap between academic scholarship and real world beneficial application to the surrounding community and beyond. The SLA GC seeks an energetic and motivated individual with demonstrated experience in leading creative interdisciplinary team building and a record of success in leading efforts to develop major disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and/or multi-investigator research, education and outreach grant proposals to federal, state and local funding agencies and corporate and foundation entities.

The Assistant Director, Research Development (AD, RD) for the SLA GC will identify new avenues of funding based on the unique scholarship at UCLA and our SLA GC partners, build teams that will expand the extramural research and education funding portfolio in urban sustainability at UCLA, and contribute to increasing the competitiveness and success of proposals through strategic leadership in this area. This position requires the ability to communicate collegially and knowledgeably with funding program directors, as well as with faculty and researchers in a variety of disciplines using diverse approaches. The ideal candidate for this position has exceptional relational, communication and interpersonal skills, funding opportunity and content expertise, impeccable attention to detail and organizational skills, and an advanced degree relevant to the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge. The primary focus of the AD, RD will be to build relationships among faculty and researchers from across disciplines in order to secure new funds for research, education and outreach activities that are aligned with the goals of the SLA GC.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: 1) relationship cultivation with funding agencies and development and maintenance of a funding opportunity strategy for the SLA GC; 2) developing an understanding of faculty research and student interests in urban sustainability across campus, especially as it relates to potential and existing funding opportunities; 3) coordination between funding agencies, faculty and researchers, and other groups as necessary to create proposal development strategies for funding opportunities; 4) lead and contribute to the development of highly competitive proposals; and 5) facilitate interdisciplinary team building activities among faculty and researchers to expand opportunities for winning funding in urban sustainability.
