Position Focus:
Yale University seeks an experienced and successful fundraiser and manager to join the university's division of Alumni Affairs and Development. As a member of the Leadership Giving team and reporting to the Director of Leadership Giving, the Deputy Director directs and grows a team of individuals responsible for soliciting prospective donors to Yale University for gifts of $10,000 to $250,000 and plays a central role in growing the future philanthropic leadership for Yale. In collaboration with other colleagues throughout Alumni Affairs and Development, develops both short and long-term plans to strategically grow the pipeline of new donors. Partners with appropriate University officials, school leadership, faculty, development senior leadership, and campaign volunteers to promote the mission of Yale to achieve fundraising results. The Deputy Director carries a portfolio of prospects and is positioned as a key driver of fundraising strategy and results for the department. Operating in a comprehensive, university-wide campaign environment, the Deputy Director guides the team in achieving annual fundraising and new prospect qualification goals consistent with the overall expectations of the larger Leadership Giving team. May travel extensively, commensurate with Yale's standard expectations for fundraising activity, contact and travel. Essential Duties:
1. Directs and grows a team of development professionals responsible for generating an increased volume of successful development activities and establishing a culture that encourages ever- improving levels of performance and responsiveness to donors. 2. Works closely with senior management to develop both short- and long-term fundraising goals and strategies. 3. Works with staff to develop and implement plans to carry out the organization's goals and strategies, including establishing specific activity goals for all phases of the donor/prospect life- cycle (cultivation, solicitation, closure and stewardship). 4. Manages engagement of faculty, administrators, and University officials in fundraising efforts. 5. Personally maintains a portfolio of gift prospects. 6. Works regularly and cooperatively with other development offices to ensure overall development priorities, plans, and initiatives are coordinated. 7. May travel (possibly extensively) commensurate with Yale's standard expectations for fundraising activity, contact and travel. 8. Performs additional development-related activities/efforts at the request of manager. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree and six or more years of related work experience in an academic institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in managing/leading a team of fundraising professionals in an academic setting is preferred.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated ability in personally and consistently closing six-figure or larger philanthropic gifts from donors. Utilizes industry best practices and a donor-centric approach in managing a donor portfolio. Active listener experienced working with donors, volunteers, faculty, and administrators.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Proven ability to lead, coach, mentor, motivate, and guide fundraising professionals to effectively cultivate, solicit and close gifts and to develop effective donor strategies to solicit donors for gifts of full philanthropic capacity. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Proactive, productive team contributor with a positive attitude. Excellent organizational, analytical, written, and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability synthesizing and prioritizing information from a wide array of sources while maintaining attention to detail and effectively managing workflow.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Exhibits behavioral and linguistic flexibility and strong intellectual and social curiosity. Commitment to an inclusive workplace. Ability to engage with diverse audiences (age, gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.).
Required Skill/Ability 5:

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Six or more years of experience fundraising in a higher education setting. Experience fundraising in various domestic markets. Experience in managing/leading a team of fundraising professionals in an academic setting is preferred.
