The Director of Development includes the following responsibilities:
Serve as a lead external fundraiser for the Middlebury Institute at Monterey. The position will carry a portfolio of leadership donors and prospects whose primary interest is Institute-related initiatives. The position will work closely with Principal, Leadership, and Gift Planning colleagues and other front-line fundraisers to coordinate strategies for those individuals whose interests include multiple aspects of the Middlebury enterprise
Provide Advancement leadership on the MIIS campus. In this management role, the Director is charged with motivating, mentoring, and evaluating development staff at the MIIS campus. She/he will also manage the programs operating budget.
Act as liaison between MIIS and Middlebury Advancement Offices. The Director will participate in senior level meetings and retreats. She/he will regularly share program highlights, priorities and developments with Vermont-based colleagues. She/he will work collaboratively with senior Advancement leadership and others to ensure the productive and efficient operation of the department in maximizing philanthropic contacts and support for MIIS and the Middlebury enterprise.


General Responsibilities:
General Responsibilities
Duties for the Director of Development position include:
serve as the principal liaison to colleagues at Middlebury to assure overall fundraising and individual prospect strategies are developed collaboratively
provide content expertise to colleagues on Institute fundraising priorities and respond to colleagues inquiries related to donor requests and interests
collaborate with Communications colleagues at the institute, in Advancement and in the Middlebury Office of Communications on broad strategy and messaging to represent the Institute to internal and external audiences
draft reports and summaries for the Board of Advisors and participate in meetings as needed
oversee and advise on related annual giving strategies and activities
help establish protocols for effective and efficient collaboration and ensure adherence to these processes
maintain a portfolio of 50 leadership donors and prospects, cultivate, solicit, and steward these prospects and donors
work collaboratively with external-facing fundraisers in annual giving, planned giving, major gifts, and principal gifts both in Monterey and Vermont,
provide general oversight for day-to-day operations


Education:
Bachelors degree required in a relevant field; masters or post graduate degree or equivalent work experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A broad working knowledge of all areas of development and the ability to build a successful mission-focused fundraising program
Vision to think and plan strategically along with an entrepreneurial spirit and personal drive
Experience in cultivating donors and securing philanthropic support for mission-based organizations
Analytical skills needed to establish strategic fund raising goals, monitor their progress, and report on results
The ability to effectively navigate within a complex, multi-campus setting where collaboration and teamwork are valued along with individual initiative and creativity
A professional, disciplined, direct and decisive leadership style that is also collaborative and accessible
Capacity to understand, articulate, and support the mission and values of MIIS and Middlebury to current and prospective donors and supporters
Proven management experience and administrative skills to organize, direct, motivate and evaluate other professionals, support staff, and volunteers
Superb organizational and time management skills
Ability to address spontaneous issues and situations, make decisions, and resolve problems
Demonstrated experience with budget preparation and resource management
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to articulate clearly and persuasively the themes and issues associated with a private liberal arts college and technical graduate school
A commitment to diversity and equity
The highest ethics and integrity, maturity, tact, and judgement
Ability to handle confidential information appropriately
Willingness to travel and to work weekends and evenings when necessary


Experience:
At least 8 years of experience in a comprehensive development program Three to five years of supervisory/management experience Specific higher education industry or functional experienced preferred

Physical Demands:
The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey maintains a smoke-free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and Drug-Free Workplace Act. Essential job functions require ability to sit for extended periods of time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
