Special Information

This position is located on NAU's Mountain Campus in Flagstaff, in the Office of Alumni Engagement, which is part of the larger Advancement | Foundation division. Generally, this job is done from a traditional office setting (in-person and virtually), but occasional travel and work during nights/weekends is required. Some occasional heavy lifting may be required.

Job Description

The Alumni Engagement Manager is critical in the university's outreach to nearly 200,000 alumni. The role is the primary manager for the Lumberjacks Thrive Externship program, a donor-funded initiative that connects students with top-level Lumberjack executives for mentorship, career exploration, professional development, and relationship-building. The position provides leadership and career-based virtual and in-person programming for students and alumni.

The Alumni Engagement Manager is a hands-on partner for Advancement | Foundation initiatives and collaborates with division colleagues and university partners to define and accomplish mission-driven goals in the areas of student and alumni engagement, social programming, and networking.

Lumberjacks Thrive is a multifaceted initiative serving the broad NAU community by providing opportunities for philanthropic education, professional development, career exploration, and connection within the thriving Lumberjack community. The Alumni Engagement Manager supports the development and management of relationships among Thrive stakeholders and Thrive participants, as well as the growth and execution of the Thrive Externship and Grants programs. This position administers the program budget and staffing requirements to ensure the program meets detailed objectives, is responsible for the day-to-day management of program records and reporting, and oversees the coordination of events and outreach affiliated with the Thrive program.

Additionally, this position works closely with the Assistant Director of Career & Mentorship and the Wilson Family Lumberjacks Thrive Graduate Assistant to advance the growth strategy of Lumberjacks Thrive and support mutually beneficial relationships that drive student and alumni success. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Career & Mentorship, Alumni Engagement.

Program and Event Development and Management - 40%
  • Works closely with Associate Vice President, Director, Assistant Director, and other Alumni Engagement staff to coordinate the Lumberjacks Thrive Externship program. Assists with program assessment, design, implementation, and annual evaluation.
  • Coordinates virtual and in-person career-focused engagement opportunities for students and alumni, working occasionally with University Events to plan and execute events and activities.
  • Leads or assists with collaborative design, development, implementation, and management of high-impact programs and projects.
  • Maintains program template documents and similar written materials outlining operations, structure, and standards for the Lumberjacks Thrive program.
  • Provides thorough, timely, and professional correspondence with all partners during planning for, and in follow-up to, all program activities.
  • Tracks all aspects of Lumberjacks Thrive program participation, including expenditures and budget, using proper documentation strategies.
  • Develops and assists with the implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization as well as state and federal regulations to ensure efficient operation of the program/project.
  • Applies baseline planning, organizing, coordinating, and facilitating skills; demonstrates working knowledge of routine work applications.
  • Uses and assists with management of program tools and resources, including an outreach/mentorship software.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains recordkeeping systems and procedures; gathers data, compiles information, prepares reports, and makes decisions related to allocating resources.

Relationship Cultivation and Management - 30%
  • Assists with day-to-day management of Thrive programs. Provides stewardship of program sponsors, alumni hosts, event and externship participants, and resources.
  • Plans and executes recruitment of Lumberjacks Thrive Externship student participants in partnership with the Assistant Director and NAU Career Development.
  • Serves as liaison to university offices and departments to grow collaboration. Utilizes NAU Career Development resources to bolster career-based programming.
  • Works with Alumni Engagement volunteer management to ensure acknowledgement of volunteer contributions.
  • Partners with the Alumni Engagement team and Advancement | Foundation (A|F) to steward relationships with students and alumni, ensuring a meaningful experience and greater affinity for NAU that advances the level of engagement and ambassadorship.

Alumni Engagement and Advancement | Foundation Team Member - 15%
  • Assists with NAU Alumni Association Board relations, incorporates Board members into career-based and engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborates with Advancement | Foundation colleagues to highlight notable alumni achievements, university initiatives, alumni resources, and to support affinity group engagement through programming that is executed in-person and virtually.
  • Supports overall alumni and donor stewardship efforts.
  • Serves as a key external outreach leader for Alumni Engagement, A|F, and NAU.
  • Assists with metrics reporting for quarterly and annual reports.

Fiscal Management - 10%
  • Manages funding; approves and monitors budget expenditures; prepares budget revisions; provides interim status reports.
  • Reconciles any program-related transactions and expenses.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field,
  • 1-2 years of project management experience, AND
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing a mentorship and/or career-based program.
  • Experience working as a relationship manager or in a community engagement and/or outreach setting.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of alumni engagement and non-profit fundraising.
  • Demonstrated skills in writing, producing, and delivering professional messaging on behalf of an organization.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Salary

Salary range begins at $54,779. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment.
