The Assistant Vice Chancellor and Senior Director of Development will have primary responsibility for developing, organizing, leading, and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program and strategies for the Graziadio Business School and plays an important front-line fundraising role. As a major gift officer, this position will be expected to personally raise major gifts in support of the dean's fundraising priorities, focusing on donors with a capacity of $25,000 to $1M+. In addition, the Senior Director of Development will mentor and supervise the Major Gifts Officer at the Graziadio Business School. The success of our mission to strengthen lives for purpose, service, and leadership depends in a large part on strong financial support from donors who enable us to provide the facilities, programs, faculty, and opportunities necessary to provide stellar, mission-driven programs for our students.

Duties
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of approximately 125-150 major gift donors/prospects ($25K-$1M+ capacity) with added focus on pipeline development to meet increasingly aggressive annual fundraising goals. Identification of major gift prospects includes prospects for planned gifts and prospective board members. In conjunction with faculty and the Corporate and Foundation Relations Dept., identify opportunities with foundations and corporate prospects. Plan and execute 12-18 significant meetings with prospects each month. Participate in advancement activities and events including dinners, receptions, alumni events & campus visits, board meetings etc., some of which involve evening and weekend work hours and regional and national travel.
  • Develop, organize, and oversee the fundraising strategy and programs for the Graziadio Business School. Coach, mentor, and supervise the Major Gifts Officer and collaborate with the Pepperdine Fund, Office of Alumni Relations & External Engagement, and other colleagues to create effective strategies, inspire success, track and analyze fundraising metrics and consistently meet or exceed individual and team key performance goals. Develop best practices and strengthen the pipeline of future donors.
  • Conduct ongoing stewardship activities to further enhance the relationship between the Graziadio Business School donors and Pepperdine University. Utilize the Pepperdine advancement database, The Raiser's Edge, to research historical records and communications with donors and prospects, and document new actions and proposals. Develop and manage annual travel and expense budget. Prepare annual Plan of Action.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: A bachelor's degree and preferred minimum five plus years of progressively responsible major gift fundraising experience. A track record that demonstrates solid success soliciting and closing major gifts. Experience closing six figure gifts with some experience closing seven figure gifts and planned gifts preferred. Demonstrated successful experience working with, adding members to, and soliciting gifts from active advisory boards comprised of prominent alumni and corporate and community volunteers. Excellent oral and written communication skills, persuasion and presentation skills. The ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals including C-suite executives, university administrators, and others. Ability to create strong relationships with key faculty and staff and gain a comprehensive understanding of their programs and opportunities for major gifts. Ability to work collaboratively with fundraising colleagues in central advancement and other schools and programs. Ability to effectively communicate the vision, mission, and core values of Pepperdine University and make persuasive verbal and written cases for supporting the Graziadio School of Business and Management's key priorities. Demonstrated ability to communicate the impact of donations and ask for significant gifts, effectively capturing and matching donor interest with specific programs, projects, scholarships, and other funding priorities. Curiosity and analytical thinking; global perspective; complex problem solving; ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple projects simultaneously with close attention to detail; meet deadlines; and work in a fast-paced environment. Strong organizational skills and a high level of accountability to performance metrics. Strong interpersonal skills as well as a high level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings. Extensive knowledge of analytical and metrics reporting is required, with experience using and tracking fundraising metrics and analyzing results. Ability to successfully manage budgets. A general level of comfort dealing with high net worth individuals, an ability to maintain discretion, and a high level of confidentiality, when dealing with sensitive internal matters and with significant donors and benefactors. Demonstrated computer competency with knowledge of Microsoft Office products, telephone, cell phone, FAX, optical scanner, copiers, standard office equipment.

Preferred: MBA or other advanced business degree preferred with five or more years of major gift fundraising experience, including in an institute of higher education and preferably in a school of business and management. Minimum 2-3+ years of management experience demonstrating the ability to inspire, lead, and motivate advancement staff, establish goals, and manage performance. A confident and competent leader, manager, and team builder who is self-motivated and effective at hiring, motivating, mentoring, and directing a staff. An individual with outstanding professional qualities who models collaboration, has organizational sensitivity to build support, confidence, and consensus from all facets of the Pepperdine and Graziadio School of Business and Management communities. Understanding and experience with the underlying principles and techniques associated with planned giving and estate gifts and ability to work closely with Planned Giving colleagues at the University. Experience with Google mail, Google docs, sheets, and calendars, Raiser's edge, Sales Force, Eventbrite, Nolij, and C2C PeopleSoft.

Candidates with significant experience may be considered for an Associate Vice Chancellor/Vice Chancellor role.
