Assistant to the Director of Athletics

NCAA Division III Ethnic Minorities and Women's Internship Grant Funded Position

Western New England University invites applications for the position of Assistant to the Director of Athletics, a position funded through the DIII grants program of the NCAA.

The University, a member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference and currently home to 20 varsity NCAA sports, is seeking the right person to assist the Director of Athletics in all areas of administering an NCAA DIII program. This is a great opportunity for a new grad to gain valuable experience in DIII athletics administration.

The Assistant to the Director of Athletics will serve as Coordinator in three main areas of the department, Digital Media, Student Athlete Leadership and Development, and Special Events. This person will work closely with the supervisors of these areas to manage and elevate the services we provide for our community.

Specific responsibilities in each area will include but are not limited to:

Coordinator of Digital Media - 50%

oResearch, create and implement a digital marketing strategy that is in line with the overall goals and objectives of the University and the Department of Athletics.

oDevelop and improve the department's brand through appropriate digital channels. This includes the growth and development of our current channels and researching and implementing new channels as appropriate.

oCreate and maintain digital content to promote and market the department and University.

oRecruit, manage and develop a student workforce to assist in the day to day operations of creating and maintaining digital media content.

Coordinator of Student Athlete Leadership and Development - 25%

oDevelop new and improve upon existing programming in the department, specifically working with our student athlete leadership groups around the topics of diversity, equity and inclusion.

oPromote awareness of and support for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives to the campus community.

oBe an advisor to student athlete leadership groups including but not limited to Black Student Athlete Alliance, SAAC and Captains Council.

oProvide assistance to the Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Athlete Leadership and Development in all aspects of managing the department's leadership development programming.

Coordinator of Special Events - 25%

oAssist the athletics administrative team in planning, organizing and running all department special events including but not limited to the Annual Golden Bear Golf Classic, Downes Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Chi Alpha Sigma Induction Ceremony, WNE Gives, and Senior Social.

oCollaborate with Alumni office, Marketing, Student Activities and other groups as necessary to help promote and support these special events.

oAssist the Athletics Equipment and Game Operations Assistant with managing and implementing planned events focused on improving the game day experience for student athletes and fans.

The grant position will be a Full Time, 10-Month position, benefits included, with a duration of two years.The candidate will start in September of 2021 and will be funded through May of 2023.

The hired intern must identify as an ethnic minority and/or a woman. For the purposes of the grant, racial ethnic minorities are described pursuant to the Federal guidelines of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB):

Preferred qualifications, knowledge, and skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required.

  • Work experience in a DIII athletic department

  • Proficient with Adobe Suite and/or other technology used in creating all forms of digital media.

  • Proficient with social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.

  • Experience in Student Athlete Development and Leadership preferred.
