Job Description:

Madison College in Madison, Wisconsin, invites applicants to apply for the open position of Dean, Strategic Integrations & Initiatives. This position is responsible for coordinating and advancing strategic projects and initiatives designed to improve the student experience and their success and transform the institution. Such projects and initiatives involve collaboration and integration of workflows across both Student Affairs & Institutional Effectiveness and other units of the college such as Academic Affairs and Technology Services.

As the Dean, Strategic Integrations & Initiatives you will:
  • Lead teams involving staff, faculty, and managers from multiple units of the college. Projects and initiatives assigned to the dean are of high-value to the EVP and senior administrators, advancing the mission and strategic directives of the college.
  • Oversee the Grants Office which develops applications for and administers awarded grants from state, federal, and local governments as well as foundations. This work involves faculty, staff, and administrators from across the college. The dean oversees the Program and Curriculum Operations Hub which has responsibilities for coordinating the development and publication of the academic course schedule.
  • Oversee Student Success Solutions, facilitating the prioritization of its work of project and operational support to Student Affairs & Institutional Effectiveness.
  • Apply leadership principles by utilizing strategic and long-term thinking acquired through significant experience in institutional settings. Decisions for the dean require interpretation of systems, policies, practices, data assessments, and culture to develop solutions to advance assigned work. These efforts require the development of staffing and financial resource allocation plans.
  • Provide leadership and development to direct reports and seeks to ensure the development of all staff in the units of supervision. The dean will advance issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in the activities of the unit and assessment of outcomes.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Provides leadership for and coordination of staff, faculty, and managers involved in strategic initiatives that enhance the student experience, support student success, and transform the institution.
  • Leads, coordinates, and facilitates the involvement of staff, faculty and administrators from across the college to develop and advance assigned projects and priorities.
  • Ensures the design of systems, processes, and practices will be effective and efficient from the perspective of students and assessment of related operational data.
  • Seeks alignment of new or revised systems and processes to other existing systems and processes that require integration to function as a whole.
  • Engages and includes representatives from relevant college units to inform the development and advancement of the work.
  • Seeks the input of students in the design and development of systems, processes, and practices.
  • Plans for the institutionalization of strategic initiatives through change management, training and other communication activities.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with leaders from across the college related to enhancing student success.


Advances strategic initiatives and projects through the following activities:
  • Develops budget and resource allocation plans, inclusive of staff time allocation, capital and operating expenses.
  • Facilitates and oversees development of timelines for activities and associated deliverables.
  • Oversees creation of communication and change management plans associated with initiatives.
  • Utilizes quantitative data to inform and shape collective, qualitative assessments of the student experience.
  • Facilitates and oversees the prioritization of project requests within Student Affairs & Institutional Effectiveness.
  • Develops reporting processes to inform EVP, senior administrators, and college community of progress on initiatives.
  • Recommends changes or alternatives to EVP and senior administrators as necessary to reflect fiscal limitations, staffing limitations, new mandates, or to better align workflows across units.


Leads processes to procure new, or extend or expand service agreements for, technology solutions needed for assigned initiatives.
  • Uses inclusive process involving staff, faculty and managers from affected units, including Technology Services, to develop requests for proposals (RFPs).
  • Develops system for assessment of RFPs, inclusive of staff, faculty and managers from affected units.
  • Coordinates with the lead business owner the development of new or revised contract service agreements


Oversees the development and management of processes to support grant application development and administration of awards that support compliance with regulations and contractual stipulations of the grant funder and the college.
  • Oversees manager and staff engaging with faculty, staff, and other deans/managers in the development of grant applications.
  • Oversees the administration of awarded grants.
  • Oversees the filing of mandated reports to grantors.
  • Ensures contracts between the college and grantors or between the college and sub-grant recipients are reviewed for legal compliance.
  • Ensures the development and regular review of the Grants Office processes and practices.


Provides leadership to the development of systems and processes related to academic course scheduling and facility use.
  • Ensures coordination between Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Technology Services, and Facility Services.
  • Oversees the implementation of work in alignment with state regulations.
  • -Supports the maintenance of working relationships across stakeholder groups.
  • Oversees the development of analyses to inform operations and planning associated with course scheduling.
  • Oversees the development and review of Program and Curriculum Operations Hub processes and practices
  • Provides leadership to the development of staff
  • Works with managers to create and maintain professional development plans for employees.
  • Facilitates sound management practices throughout the department through an individualized evaluation and professional development plan for each direct report.
  • Integrates concepts of equity and inclusion into the training and development of employees in the unit.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of the staff development initiatives.
  • Provides broad guidance and direction for the Strategic Integrations and Initiatives units.
  • Develops and maintains an annual budget and efficient staffing plan for the unit.
  • Oversees the prioritization and assignment of work with the unit.
  • Promotes and maintains a collaborative approach to the management of all staff.
  • Ensures employees follow policies and procedures and ensures a health and safe working environment.
  • Recommends the employment, discipline and retention of personnel assigned to the unit.
  • Communicates to staff the priorities of other college units whose goals require support and effort from Strategic Integrations and Initiatives units.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, information, data, and opinions to inform, influence, and/or persuade individuals.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of and skill in strategic and operational planning. Skill in the development and assessment of workflows and procedures.
  • Knowledge of data practices, inclusive of how to use data to inform and assess strategies and associated system, process and practice development or revision. Skill in budget development and resource management.
  • Knowledge of project management and change management principles and practices. Knowledge of the principles and practices of process design and improvement.
  • Knowledge, experience and skill in leadership development principles with the ability to manage professional and managerial staff in a collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Ability to understand culture and its impacts on system, process, and practice development and revision and use innovative approaches to collaboration across college units.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level: Master's Degree - M.A., M.S., or M. Ed

Work Experience: Minimum of 7 years of diverse and progressively responsible experience in education and management, directly related to the responsibilities of this position. Experience should include Higher Education leadership, business administration, public administration, or related field.
