DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

POSITION SUMMARY

In tandem with the Journals Publisher, manages the individual titles that compose the UC Press Journals Program (40 titles) and assumes independent management of any assigned specific titles. Management of individual titles involves regular communication, collaboration, and problem-solving with editorial offices and society partners. Will be responsible for working closely with Journals Production colleagues to ensure issues are published on time and that titles are meeting any published content goals or expectations. Will work with Journals Marketing colleagues to help inform and facilitate any marketing efforts involving editorial stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • 80% Journals Program Operations In tandem with and under general direction of the Journals Publisher manages the day to day operations of individual titles composing the Journals Program. Makes recommendations for changes to any individual titles.
  • 10% Contracts and Editorial Operations In consultation with Journals Publisher, negotiates and drafts editorial and publishing contracts. Coordinates editorial searches and onboarding and offboarding of new editors, including implementation of manuscript management applications
  • 5% Develops and maintains strong working relationships with journal editorial stakeholders.
  • 5% Prepares publishing reports for editorial stakeholders

Experience

Minimum of 5 years of journals publishing, publishing, or project management required.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of the journal publishing process.
  • Working knowledge of open access journal publishing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain working relationships with internal and external parties.
  • Solid verbal, written and presentation skills to articulate ideas and issues in individual and group settings.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem resolution skills.
  • Familiarity with manuscript management software and using bibliographic tools such as SCOPUS and Web of Science
  • Proficiency with internet searches, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database and e-mail applications.

Education

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training required

Travel Requirements
5% Travel to journal conferences, professional meetings, and/or to meet with journal editors.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person hired will be required to reside within California and report to work on-site at UC's Office of the President (UCOP) located in Oakland, CA on a regular basis.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Payscale: $82,000 - $97,400, commensurate with experience
Full Salary Range: $70,100 - $124,700

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This is a hybrid position. This position will be based in downtown Oakland, CA, and the successful candidate will be expected to work onsite at least two days per week.
