Basic Function:
The Major Gift Officer reports to the Executive Director of Development and is an integral part of a fast-paced and dynamic team that seeks to achieve ambitious goals in pursuit of the university's fundraising priorities. The Major Gift Officer is responsible for planning and implementing a program of identification, cultivation, visitation and solicitation of individual major gift, planned gift, and partnership prospects, in support of fundraising for the university's strategic fundraising priorities.


Representative Duties:
Design, develop and implement results-oriented strategies, plans, and tactics for discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, for major gift and planned gift donors with an emphasis on completing a minimum of 100 personal donor visits per year. Set and achieve individual goals that support team and division goals. E

Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 prospects to include charting plans and timetable for each prospect to include cultivation, involvement, solicitation, and appropriate acknowledgement. E

Solicit gifts through personal visits, proposal presentation, follow up telephone calls, and coordinated written correspondence. E

Draft proposals, grants, and gift agreements for major gift prospects; draft effective correspondence and written material that clearly and precisely convey the intended message. E

Maintain a timetable, checklist and reporting system to track activities with each prospect. E

Collaborate with the Executive Director of Development to establish and meet personal fundraising targets. Practice self-discipline and deploy strategies for individual goal achievement. E

Serve as a key liaison on behalf of academic deans, program directors, and other campus leaders to accomplish fundraising. E

Collaborate and participate in reporting sessions with Advancement Team members and the Vice President to keep attention focused on the progress of the major gift work and goal achievement. E

Troubleshoot potential issues regarding external (donor/prospect) and internal (university staff, faculty, students) communications and support. E

Respond to external and internal requests in a timely fashion. E

Proactively build positive relationships with donors and colleagues in a manner that supports the accomplishment of Cal Lutherans fundraising goals. E

Engage in productive problem-solving regarding service issues and complaints. E

Employ industry-wide concepts and best practices in campaign planning, strategy and implementation. E

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: A Bachelors Degree and three years of experience in Higher Education Fundraising, Nonprofit Fundraising and/or Corporate Sales.

Proven success in goal achievement for capital, scholarship and endowment fund development.

Demonstrated accomplishment in the acquisition of major and planned gifts from individuals.

Experience engaging academic leaders, faculty, and volunteer partners in the development of meaningful and productive relationships with prospects and donors.


Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree or Advanced Degree
5 years experience in Higher Education Fundraising
Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE)
Experience with change management processes
Experience with CRM Software


Licenses and Other Requirements:
Valid California drivers license
Availability to work weekends and nights
Flexibility to travel 65%

Office environment; driving a vehicle to conduct work; evening or variable hours.
